Out of all the silly, progressive-rock tinged collectives from the idyllic Perth sunshine, Rental Knives are definitely one of them. Formed by Perth music legends Jamie Gallacher (Pat Chow), James Rose (Hip Priest) with Perth music brothers Declan & Axel Carrington (Australian Critters, New Talk), Rental Knives are the balance of uncountable time signatures and a deep love of Jaws lore that you never knew you needed. Their work is one of continual wrestling for balance, between the forces of the brain (complex harmonies, intertwining polyrhythms) and the heart (lyrical content ranging from foodstuffs to jellyfish stings, a complete disregard of earnestness).
Showcasing their varied tastes and talents, their first single ‘Gimme That Cheese’ is their initial offering of terrific treats. The song explores the space afforded with paring humour and pathos, structure and exploration & the continual clash between high & low art. Recorded with local maestro Mikey Strong (You’re Weird), ‘Gimme That Cheese’ is the most fun you can have while craning your neck in wonder.
The band are teaming up with Mikey’s Aloysha for a duel launch on Saturday September 24th at Northbridge’s favourite watering hole, The Bird. Supports from Dideon’s Bible and the Killer Hipsters from 8pm.
